Knicks Eye $215 Million Superstar as Top NBA Trade Target, Insider Reveals

The New York Knicks are reportedly compiling a list of potential trade targets for upcoming NBA offseasons, with The Athletic’s Fred Katz assembling a group of prospects geared towards long-term viability.

One notable name on their radar is Phoenix Suns standout Devin Booker, identified by Katz as a prime target should he become available due to the Suns’ ongoing struggles despite a hefty payroll. In his June 17, 2024 article titled “Devin Booker? Brandon Ingram? Which stars could the Knicks target and how would they fit?” Katz highlighted Booker as an “obvious name” for the Knicks, citing his superstar status with multiple top-four MVP finishes and two All-NBA selections at just 27 years old. Notably, Booker is also represented by CAA, the agency formerly led by Knicks president Leon Rose.

While Phoenix is not anticipated to initiate a rebuild this offseason, Katz acknowledges potential changes in 2025 if the team’s performance remains stagnant. Booker is under contract with the Suns through the 2027-28 season, commanding a substantial four-year, $221 million deal that poses significant salary cap complexities for any potential trade involving the Knicks.

Katz further explained, “As the league scrutinizes how exceeding the luxury tax apron can hinder team flexibility, the Knicks must navigate these rules carefully, particularly with the first apron adjustments.” This regulation dictates that teams above the apron cannot absorb more salary than they trade, complicating direct transactions between teams in similar financial standings.

Regarding the Knicks’ current roster dynamics, Julius Randle emerges as their primary trade asset. Despite a truncated 2023-24 season due to injury, Randle, a two-time All-Star, remains integral to the team’s future plans. With two seasons remaining on his $117 million contract and a player option for free agency in 2025, Randle’s status will undoubtedly influence the Knicks’ strategic decisions in the coming seasons.

In summary, while the Knicks contemplate potential moves to bolster their roster, the acquisition of a star like Devin Booker presents both allure and substantial logistical challenges, underscoring the intricate nature of NBA trade dynamics.
