Ohio State HC Ryan Day Reveals Intriguing Plans for Caleb Downs

Head Football Coach Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes are gearing up for a strong push in the 2024-25 season, bolstered by the addition of former Alabama defensive back Caleb Downs via the transfer portal in January. Head coach Ryan Day has unveiled intriguing plans for Downs, indicating a potential dual role for the talented player.

Day revealed that Downs spent time in running back meetings during the offseason, sparking conversations about him taking snaps at both running back and safety. This development adds an interesting dynamic to the Buckeyes’ lineup, especially with the return of star running back TreVeyon Henderson, who amassed 926 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

Fans expressed mixed reactions to Downs’ potential dual role, especially given Urban Meyer’s high praise for the current roster. “As of now, this is one of the most talented rosters in the last decade – maybe ever,” Meyer stated, highlighting the quality of athletes at every position.

Despite the questions surrounding Downs’ involvement in the backfield, his talent and versatility make him a valuable asset for Ohio State. In his debut season with Alabama, Downs recorded 70 tackles, two interceptions, three passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, earning SEC Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-SEC honors.

Downs’ decision to transfer followed the retirement announcement of Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban, who praised Downs for his maturity and coachability. “He’s a very instinctive football player. There’s no arrogance about him being one of the best players in the country at his position. He’s very coachable,” Saban remarked.

Ohio State, coming off an 11-2 season, narrowly missed the College Football Playoff after losing to Michigan in the Big 10 title game and falling to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. As they prepare for the upcoming season, the Buckeyes aim to solidify their standing in the Big 10 and make a strong bid for the CFP. Overcoming the reigning champion Michigan Wolverines will be a significant challenge, but with players like Caleb Downs in versatile roles, Ohio State looks poised for an exciting and competitive season.
