Penguins Hire David Quinn as Assistant Coach to Bolster Defense, Reuniting with Mike Sullivan

Head coach David Quinn

The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially announced David Quinn as their new assistant coach, a month after parting ways with Todd Reirden. Quinn, a seasoned NHL coach, will focus solely on the team’s defense, leaving the power play responsibilities to be determined. This strategic move is aimed at addressing the team’s defensive lapses while their power play, which was the third worst in the league last season with a 15.3% success rate, awaits a new leader.

A Rocky Start and a Promising Reunion

David Quinn’s NHL coaching journey began with the New York Rangers in the 2018-19 season, where he posted a record of 96-87-25 over three seasons. Despite a less than stellar stint with the San Jose Sharks, where he finished with a 41-98-25 record, Quinn’s reputation as a diligent and insightful coach remains intact. His appointment in Pittsburgh marks a significant reunion with Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan, his former Boston University teammate.

Sullivan, who has consistently praised Quinn’s work ethic and coaching acumen, expressed his enthusiasm for the reunion. “(Quinn) is a real hard-working hockey guy,” Sullivan noted in January 2023 when the Penguins hosted the Sharks. “He’s come up through the ranks the hard way. He’s honed his craft at so many different levels. Quinn has learned through every experience that he’s gone through. He brings a certain humility to his job every day that makes him the coach that he is.”

The Quinn-Sullivan Connection

Quinn’s ability to connect with players is a cornerstone of his coaching philosophy, as emphasized by Sullivan. “He is a student of the game and a hard worker,” Sullivan remarked, highlighting Quinn’s tactical understanding and personal skills. These attributes are expected to enhance the Penguins’ defensive strategies and player development.

Adding to the excitement is Quinn’s previous collaboration with star defenseman Erik Karlsson. Under Quinn’s guidance, Karlsson had a record-breaking season, becoming the first defenseman in 30 years to log 101 points. Their reunion in Pittsburgh is highly anticipated, with hopes that Quinn can replicate similar success and fortify the Penguins’ defense.

General Manager Kyle Dubas’ Endorsement

Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas is optimistic about Quinn’s potential impact. “David Quinn brings a wealth of coaching and developmental experience across the highest levels of professional and international hockey,” Dubas stated. “Quinn has a long track record of helping elite defencemen reach their full potential, and we look forward to the impact he can make on our defensive group and our entire program.”

Looking Ahead

The Penguins’ defensive struggles were a significant factor in their performance last season, and Quinn’s appointment is a decisive step towards addressing these issues. With a roster featuring Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, Bryan Rust, Kris Letang, and Jake Guentzel, the Penguins have no shortage of talent. The addition of Quinn, with his focus on defensive improvement, offers a promising path forward.

If Quinn can tighten the Penguins’ defense and foster another standout season from Karlsson, the team is poised to return to playoff contention and potentially make a deep run. Penguins fans have every reason to be optimistic about this new chapter, as Quinn’s experience, character, and coaching prowess align perfectly with the team’s ambitions.
