Rockies Trade Shake-Up All-Star Player on the Move, Ryan McMahon Staying Put

Teams in need of a catcher should pay attention, as an All-Star is reportedly available for the right price.USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday that the struggling Colorado Rockies “will trade” catcher Elias Díaz this year. However, Nightengale also noted the team “will not” move infielder Ryan McMahon before the July 30 deadline.

This strategy makes sense given Díaz’s age and contract status; at 33 years old and in the final season of his contract, he is a prime trade candidate. McMahon, on the other hand, is 29 and signed through 2027, positioning him as a valuable piece for Colorado’s future.

The Rockies are currently 25-45 and last in the National League West, but McMahon’s performance suggests he could be a key player in future playoff runs. He’s slashing .265/.346/.462 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI this season, and Nightengale suggested he “should make the All-Star team this year.

As for Díaz, he earned his first All-Star selection last season and has continued to perform well this year, posting a .303/.352/.439 slash line with five home runs and 28 RBI in 55 games. His offensive contributions from the catching position would significantly boost any contender in need of an impactful player behind the plate.

While Díaz is typically known for his offense, his defense has also improved this year. Historically, he has a career mark of minus-45 defensive runs saved above average, but this season he’s at a solid plus-two, according to FanGraphs.

From the Rockies’ perspective, trading Díaz this year would allow them to receive value in return before he potentially leaves in free agency during the upcoming offseason. McMahon, with his long-term contract, remains a cornerstone for the team’s future, making Díaz the primary focus ahead of the trade deadline.
