Vancouver Canucks Ink Filip Hronek to Eight-Year, $7.25 Million Extension

The Vancouver Canucks have secured defenseman Filip Hronek for the long term, signing him to an eight-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $7.25 million. Hronek, who was slated to become a restricted free agent later this month, now solidifies his future with the Canucks.

Acquired from the Detroit Red Wings in a significant trade last March, the 26-year-old Czech defenseman has quickly become a cornerstone of Vancouver’s blue line. In the 2023-24 season, Hronek delivered a career-best performance, tallying 48 points (5 goals, 43 assists) across 81 regular-season games. His offensive prowess and defensive reliability have been pivotal for the Canucks, enhancing their defensive depth significantly.

Selected by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft (53rd overall), Hronek has amassed 205 points (35 goals, 170 assists) in 390 regular-season appearances split between Detroit and Vancouver. Additionally, he contributed two points during Vancouver’s playoff run this year, showcasing his value in high-pressure situations.

Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin expressed confidence in Hronek’s continued growth and impact on the team. “Filip has seamlessly integrated into our defensive core, providing stability and strength on the right side,” Allvin stated. “His skating ability, defensive acumen, and offensive creativity make him an ideal top-pairing defenseman. His commitment to competitiveness and leadership qualities have been evident throughout this season.”

Hronek’s extension underscores Vancouver’s commitment to building a competitive roster for the future, anchoring their defensive unit with a versatile and skilled defenseman in his prime.
