Cleveland Cavaliers’ Coaching Search Nears Conclusion, Decision Expected Today
Cavs Target James Borrego Strongly Considered for Pistons Coaching Role Amidst Intensifying NBA Coaching Carousel
With Monty Williams out in Detroit, Cleveland Cavaliers head coaching target James Borrego will reportedly be “strongly considered” for the Pistons job. Borrego, of course, worked as an assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans this past season, where new Pistons president Trajan Langdon served in the front office.
Does this mean the Cavs will lose out on Borrego if he’s their top choice? Not necessarily.
James Borrego was the lead assistant in New Orleans this season, where he overlapped with new Pistons president Trajan Langdon. Borrego, though, has been in strong contention for Cleveland’s search that is expected to be finalized as early as today. https://t.co/pMq5yGMFuO

According to Yahoo’s Jake Fischer, the Cavs could finalize their coaching search as early as today. However, Fischer did not specify who the final candidate would be if the decision is made today. Reporting from Marc Stein and others suggests Borrego is the frontrunner for the Cavs. With the Pistons also showing interest in Borrego, and Borrego being involved in the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching search, it gives Cleveland all the more reason to move quickly.
Borrego is one of three candidates to have met with the Cavs in person. The others are former Brooklyn Nets head coach and current Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori.
