Disappointing News Ahead of Denver Broncos Training Camp
The Denver Broncos traded for former New York Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson in exchange for a simple swap of late-round picks before the 2024 NFL Draft.
Judging by the trade details and Wilson’s underwhelming three-year stint with the Jets, it seemed the Broncos had low expectations for the former No. 2 pick.
This was underscored when Denver used a first-round pick on Oregon quarterback Bo Nix.
After Denver’s mandatory minicamp, reports have surfaced about Wilson’s uncertain status in Mile High.
Nick Kosmider of The Athletic notes that Wilson needs to catch up to secure the No. 2 quarterback spot over veteran Jarrett Stidham. This sentiment is echoed by others.
Is Zach Wilson at risk of not making the Denver Broncos’ roster?
It’s too early to definitively say, but based on his Jets tenure and recent reports, it’s a possibility.
Wilson started 33 games in three seasons with the Jets, recording a 12-21 record. He threw 23 touchdowns against 25 interceptions, averaging 185 yards per game, marking him as one of the biggest draft busts in recent history.
For Denver’s quarterbacks, Nix appears to be the starter, with head coach Sean Payton praising him.
“It’s been exactly what we saw,” Payton said in May. “He was bigger than I expected, but he’s doing well.”
Stidham also has an advantage, having played in three games for the Broncos last season. If Denver opts for only two quarterbacks on its 53-man roster, Zach Wilson might be the odd man out.
