Exclusive Manager Gives Insight into Future of Highly Player-After AFL Free Agent

Josh Battle‘s manager has provided an update on the future of the sought-after St Kilda free agent amid interest from rival clubs Hawthorn, Collingwood, and Melbourne. The versatile swingman, who remains undecided, is also considering St Kilda’s offer to retain him.

As an unrestricted free agent, Battle could attract substantial offers from other clubs without the need for draft pick compensation, given the high demand for key defenders in the market.

According to his manager Tom Seccull, Battle is evaluating various factors and has not set a timeline for making a decision, possibly waiting until closer to the off-season.

“He’s having a standout year, both in defense and occasionally up forward,” Seccull told Gettable. “There are multiple variables influencing his decision. Recently becoming a father is also a consideration. There’s no rush to finalize a contract decision at this stage.”

Battle, enjoying a career-best season in 2024 with St Kilda, where he has played since his debut eight years ago, has been pivotal under coach Ross Lyon, averaging personal highs in disposals and marks per game.

St Kilda’s football boss, David Misson, expressed optimism about retaining Battle, noting ongoing discussions with his management. “We’re working closely with his representatives and believe Josh is keen to stay. Our priority is to secure his long-term commitment,” Misson said in a recent interview with 7 News.

Should Battle depart, St Kilda could receive free agency compensation, although potential acquisitions like Geelong’s Tyson Stengle might impact the compensation calculus.

Battle is among eight free agents at St Kilda this year, including Seb Ross, Tim Membrey, Riley Bonner, Tom Campbell, Liam Stocker, Jimmy Webster, and Mason Wood.
