Rockies furious over umpire’s missed call in dramatic collapse against Dodgers: ‘You can’t be serious’
Rockies players, manager Bud Black, and the team’s broadcasting crew were incensed after a missed check-swing call on Tuesday night resulted in a go-ahead three-run homer by the Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez, contributing to Colorado’s epic meltdown in their 11-9 home loss.
The Rockies appeared to have the game secured when Hernandez seemingly swung on a 1-2 pitch, but veteran umpire Lance Barksdale ruled that he checked his swing.
Hernandez then homered on the next pitch, completing the Dodgers’ comeback from a 9-4 deficit in the ninth inning.
Absolute chaos in the 9th inning of the Rockies Dodgers game 😬
Down to his final strike, Teoscar Hernandez was called safe on a questionable half swing. Rockies manager Bud Black was ejected for arguing it.

“I saw a swing — check-swing, but I thought he went,” said Black, according to MLB.com. Black was ejected after erupting at the missed call.
The Rockies are not without fault for squandering a five-run lead in the ninth inning, even with a 99 percent chance to win with one out, according to Statcast. However, they seemed to be unfairly disadvantaged on Tuesday night.
The Dodgers were trailing 9-8 with two runners on and two outs when Hernandez faced reliever Victor Vodnik. Vodnik threw a high 99.9-mph fastball, which appeared to induce a check-swing from Hernandez, seemingly committing to the pitch.
Home plate umpire Will Little consulted with first base umpire Lance Barksdale, who ruled that Hernandez held his swing on the 1-2 pitch, much to the disbelief of most viewers not supporting the Dodgers.
“He went,” said Rockies announcer Drew Goodman. “Oh, man. Lance Barksdale said no.”
Black yelled at Barksdale following the pitch, and although we’re not expert lip readers, it looked like he shouted “F–king bulls–t” at the veteran umpire.
This outburst led to Black’s ejection.
It appeared Teoscar Hernández struck out to end the game, but it was ruled no swing.
The Rockies booth was not happy… especially after Hernández hit a go-ahead 3-run HR on the next pitch to cap off a 7-run Dodgers inning.
