Cal Quantrill proven to be a valuable trade asset, The Rockies are open to the idea.

On November 17, 2023, the Colorado Rockies discreetly traded Minor League catcher Kody Huff to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Cal Quantrill. The Guardians had waived Quantrill to cut costs—he was expected to earn over $6 million in arbitration, while the Rockies settled for $6.55 million—and move on from a player with injury concerns. This trade has proven to be one of Bill Schmidt’s best moves for the 2024 season.

As the Rockies face another disappointing season, the MLB norm suggests they should trade valuable players to aid contending teams and potentially benefit the Rockies in other ways. Among potential trade assets like Elias Díaz, Jalen Beeks, and less likely candidates like Ryan McMahon, Quantrill stands out as a particularly intriguing option if made available.

Why trade Quantrill? The Rockies’ rotation was decimated in 2023 and remains shaky in 2024, worsened by Kyle Freeland’s struggles and injuries. Quantrill, however, has been a standout performer with a strong rebound year and an effective splitter. He consistently delivers, often pitching at least six innings per start, with nine quality starts out of fifteen and only one poor outing against the Astros in Mexico City. His pitch mix, particularly his splitter, helps mitigate his career-high 9.4% walk rate by inducing a 46.9% ground ball rate and maintaining a 16.8% strikeout rate. He excels in high-pressure situations, holding opponents to a .172/.265/.190 slash line with runners in scoring position.

Quantrill’s success at both high altitude and on the road makes him a valuable asset for any rotation, especially for teams in the congested NL Wild Card race. With an affordable contract and one more year of control, he could attract multiple suitors, offering the Rockies a chance to benefit as they rebuild their rotation.

Why not trade him? The Rockies might hesitate to trade Quantrill due to his valuable control and positive impact on the team. The Rockies, who struggle to attract external talent, might prefer to retain him. His integration into the team and success at altitude make him a prized player. The Rockies might even consider extending his contract, despite roster congestion and upcoming returns of other pitchers. While keeping Quantrill could benefit the team, trading him could be more advantageous in the long run, allowing him to contribute to a contender and helping the Rockies focus on developing their emerging talent.

Ultimately, while the Rockies are likely to keep Quantrill due to their attachment to him, trading him might be the best move for both the player and the team’s future.
