Roosters Counting Wallabies Star Player for Playoff Push
Nawaqanitawase’s management requested a release from Rugby Australia just over a month ago, but negotiations have yet to reach a resolution. It has become evident that Nawaqanitawase is not in the plans of new Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt following his decision to switch codes.
However, a complicating factor is Nawaqanitawase’s potential selection for Australia’s rugby sevens squad at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. Australian sevens coach John Manenti praised the 23-year-old as “the biggest body we’ve got” and a potential asset for the Paris campaign.
The Roosters have engaged with the NRL to explore the logistics of a possible move before June 30, including the possibility of registering him for this year if he participates in the Olympics.
“At this stage, the Roosters have expressed interest in bringing Mark Nawaqanitawase before his contract start date,” stated his agent, Milan Volavola-Shankar. “We are currently in discussions and negotiations with Rugby Australia regarding the potential for an early release, contingent upon his potential selection for rugby sevens at the Olympics.”
The Titans are also interested in securing their new Wallabies recruit, Carter Gordon, to the Gold Coast before June 30, following his signing from 2025. However, Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh has indicated reluctance to grant an early release, citing Gordon’s ongoing contention for Wallabies selection.
“I maintain the same stance: the priority is selecting the best team to win the next Test match,” Waugh emphasized in a recent interview.
