Detroit Red Wings Eyeing Potential Trade for Ducks’ Star Trevor Zegras

Trevor Zegras #11 of the Anaheim Ducks

The Detroit Red Wings could be in the market for Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras, according to a “realistic trade idea” proposed by Max Bultman of The Athletic. Bultman shared his thoughts in a June 19 mailbag, responding to a reader’s query about a potential trade that would be a no-brainer for Detroit.

“We can debate what’s realistic, but one trade idea I’ve kicked around in my head would be dealing the 15th pick and a defense prospect (William Wallinder? Albert Johansson?) to Anaheim for Trevor Zegras,” Bultman replied to reader Hunter G.

Bultman acknowledged the polarizing nature of Zegras but emphasized his potential: “I know Zegras is a divisive player, but even after a down year, I see a highly creative 23-year-old forward with two 60-plus point seasons already on his resume.”

Zegras’ Impressive Track Record

Zegras, 23, has played 211 NHL games over four seasons, tallying 154 points (55 goals, 99 assists). Despite being limited to 31 games in the 2024 season due to an ankle injury, he still managed to score 15 points. His past achievements include two 60-plus point seasons, underscoring his offensive capabilities.

“Yes, he has some flaws in his game,” Bultman noted, “but some players’ offensive output can outweigh deficiencies. Zegras clears that bar.”

Upside and Availability

Zegras burst onto the scene with 23 goals and 61 points in 75 games during his rookie season in 2021-22, finishing second in Calder Trophy voting. He followed that with a 65-point sophomore season, maintaining a consistent scoring pace.

Currently under contract with a $5.75 million cap hit through the 2025-26 season, Zegras is a controllable asset, making him an attractive option for teams seeking to bolster their offense. “He’s young, a proven playmaker, signed for two more seasons, and there probably won’t be a better buy-low opportunity on him than right now,” Bultman wrote.

However, Bultman raised concerns about Detroit’s willingness to trade for Zegras, given the relationship between Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman and Ducks GM Pat Verbeek. “The biggest hurdle in calling it realistic, for me, is whether Steve Yzerman will really be interested in trading for a player who his long-time right-hand man, Ducks GM Pat Verbeek, is trading away,” Bultman explained.

Ducks Open to Trade Talks

Anaheim’s GM Verbeek has been open about exploring all options in the trade market and free agency, as he told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic on June 3. While Verbeek did not specifically comment on trading Zegras, LeBrun reported that the Ducks are listening to offers for the forward and would consider moving him for the right deal.

Red Wings’ Need for Forwards

The Red Wings may face significant changes in their forward lineup, which could make a trade for Zegras particularly appealing. Notably, veteran forward Patrick Kane might return to the New York Rangers after expressing disappointment with his performance there while dealing with an injury. Kane, who signed a one-year deal with Detroit, contributed 20 goals and 27 assists in 50 games during the 2024 season.

Additionally, forward David Perron will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Perron expressed his desire to stay in Detroit, saying during his end-of-season availability, “There’s no reason at this point to think about anywhere else or anything else. I hope it works out.” He completed his two-year contract with a cap hit of $4.75 million, scoring 17 goals and 30 assists in 76 games in 2024.

Conclusion

As the Red Wings look to strengthen their roster, Trevor Zegras represents a potential high-reward acquisition despite the inherent risks. With the possibility of key forwards leaving and Zegras’ proven offensive talent, Detroit could be poised to make a significant move. The coming weeks will reveal whether Yzerman sees Zegras as a fit for the Red Wings’ future.
