St. Louis CITY SC Secures Quartet on Short-Term Loan From CITY2
St. Louis CITY SC has added midfielder John Klein, forward Brendan McSorley, homegrown talent Tyson Pearce, and defender Michael Wentzel to their squad through a short-term loan agreement from their MLS NEXT Pro team, St. Louis CITY2. The quartet will be eligible for Wednesday’s MLS match against Colorado Rapids at CITYPARK.
Klein, who recently featured in a gameday roster for the first team, has one appearance remaining. Wentzel appeared for CITY SC in the Concacaf Champions Cup against Houston, which did not count towards his total gameday inclusions. This marks his second official call-up this season after being on the gameday roster versus New York City FC without playing. McSorley has earned his first call-up of the season.
Klein, 24, made his third MLS appearance last Saturday against FC Dallas, adding to the two appearances he made for CITY SC last season. He has been in fine form at CITY2, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 12 matches this season. Over the past year-and-a-half with CITY2, Klein has amassed 17 goals and six assists in 41 matches.
Wentzel, 22, has been a pivotal figure for CITY2, captaining them to a strong 9-2-2 record this year. He has played a crucial role in securing five clean sheets and has started and completed 90 minutes in 10 out of 14 matches.
McSorley, a third-round MLS SuperDraft pick, started 12 matches for CITY2, scoring two goals. He had an impressive collegiate career at Providence College, where he totaled 23 goals and five assists in 62 matches, with his standout season coming as a senior when he scored 11 goals and provided one assist in 17 starts.
Pearce, aged 16, is one of three homegrown players for CITY SC and is currently designated off the senior roster. He has featured in 11 out of CITY2’s 14 matches this season, starting in seven of them.
According to MLS regulations, this short-term agreement allows clubs to sign players on loan from their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate for various competitions including MLS matches, U.S. Open Cup, Concacaf Champions League, Canadian Championship, and exhibition matches.
Each player can be included on up to four MLS league match rosters per season, with a maximum of two appearances in league matches, while there are no such restrictions for non-league games during the terms of their four Short-Term Agreements.
