From Solar Panels to Second Row Star Player Charts New Course

Reuben Porter, once an apprentice electrician installing solar panels in Sydney, received a life-changing call from Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall after a decade-long pursuit of his NRL dream.

A talented forward who moved from New Zealand as a teenager, Porter enjoyed early success winning the 2014 SG Ball grand final with the Sydney Roosters alongside future stars like Latrell Mitchell and Angus Crichton.

However, setbacks including injuries and the COVID-19 hiatus in NSW Cup delayed Porter’s NRL debut aspirations. Balancing grueling 12-hour days on construction sites with gym sessions and footy training, Porter contemplated giving up as he entered his mid-20s with family responsibilities.

In 2023, amid an electrical apprenticeship, Porter rediscovered his passion playing for the North Sydney Bears and reached the NSW Cup grand final. When the Tigers offered him a train-and-trial deal for the 2024 season, Porter accepted, despite juggling his new trade with professional rugby league commitments.

Following Marshall’s call confirming his NRL debut, Porter reflected on the support of his partner, who encouraged him to persevere when times were tough. Now fully focused on rugby league after quitting his day job, Porter made a successful NRL debut in a memorable victory over the Gold Coast Titans.

As he prepares for his third NRL appearance, this time in the second row against Canberra, Porter acknowledges the journey that brought him to Campbelltown Stadium, grateful for the opportunity to pursue his passion full-time.
