KU secures safety Jones for their 2025 class.
Kansas strengthened its secondary on Saturday night with the commitment of Darrion Jones, a safety from Cape Coral, Florida, for the class of 2025.
While not yet rated by all services, 247Sports lists Jones as a three-star prospect. He had previously included KU in his top three along with Miami and Ohio State and reported offers from Iowa State, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ole Miss.
Jayhawks’ defensive tackles coach Jim Panagos offered Jones a scholarship in February, according to Jones’ social media. Jones then visited Lawrence during the final weekend of official visits.
Listed by Rivals as a 6-foot-3, 178-pound athlete, Jones becomes the second player expected to play safety in the 2025 freshman class, following Brandon Schmelzle from Axtell, and the second Floridian overall, after tight end Joeseph Skipworth.
The 2025 class now includes 13 players overall midway through the weekend.
Safety is a position expected to undergo significant changes for KU following the 2024 season, with Marvin Grant and O.J. Burroughs exhausting their eligibility, although Devin and Jalen Dye have an additional year to play.
Jones and Schmelzle join defensive coordinator and position coach Brian Borland’s recent safety recruits, following early enrollee Damani Maxson in the 2024 class and Taylor Davis in 2023.
