Cavaliers Select Kenny Atkinson as Next Head Coach, Source Confirms

Kenny Atkinson is introduced as the new head coach of Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers have zeroed in on their next head coach, tapping Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson for the role, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday.

Negotiations for Atkinson’s contract are already underway, with a formal agreement expected imminently, sources added.

The Cavaliers, following a meticulous selection process, narrowed down their search to Atkinson and New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego. However, Borrego, who has ties with new Detroit Pistons president Trajan Langdon, is now poised to emerge as a leading contender in Detroit’s coaching hunt, ESPN sources revealed.

Atkinson, renowned for his stint as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, where he oversaw notable player development, including stars like Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert, now assumes leadership of a Cavaliers team that has shown promise in recent seasons. Under his tenure, the Nets steadily progressed despite challenges, before Atkinson’s departure amid the 2019-20 season.

Sources indicate that Cavaliers’ front office executives, President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman and General Manager Mike Gansey, are particularly eager for Atkinson’s proven track record in player development to benefit rising star Evan Mobley.

With the coaching appointment settled, Cleveland’s focus turns decisively towards securing a contract extension for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, who has one year remaining on his current deal before an early termination option.

Atkinson brings a wealth of experience, having served as an assistant coach for nine NBA seasons, including stints with the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, LA Clippers, and most recently, the Warriors.

His addition underscores Cleveland’s commitment to bolstering its coaching staff and cultivating young talent, positioning the franchise for future success in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
