Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron had a challenging start to their Copa America campaigns in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
26-year-old Guimaraes featured for Brazil in their Group D match against Costa Rica, playing the entire 90 minutes in a frustrating 0-0 draw despite Brazil’s dominance with 70% possession and 12 shots on target.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United winger Almiron had a disappointing outing for Paraguay against Colombia. He started the match but was substituted before the hour mark after registering just 15 touches and a 57% pass completion rate. Paraguay ended up losing 2-1 to Colombia, with Almiron’s performance possibly affecting his transfer prospects as Newcastle looks to sell him to fund a new signing this summer.
Newcastle United pair Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron both had disappointing starts to their Copa America campaigns.
Guimaraes started for Brazil in their opening group match against Costa Rica in the United States, a game expected to be a straightforward win. However, Brazil struggled throughout, and despite Guimaraes narrowly missing a shot over the crossbar late in the game, the favorites could only manage a disappointing goalless draw.
Meanwhile, Almiron’s Paraguay suffered a 2-1 defeat to Colombia in their tournament opener. Almiron, who has been the subject of transfer speculation away from Newcastle, played for 59 minutes in his familiar right-attacking role.
