Star Player Commits Long-Term to the Hawks

22-year-old Richardson has solidified her role as one of Hawthorn’s most dependable defenders, achieving prominence during a breakout 2023 season where she finished as runner-up in the club’s best and fairest award.

The versatile 170cm back grew more confident as the season progressed, averaging 11.7 disposals per game, with 6.8 intercept possessions and 3.7 marks. She made her debut in Round 6 of Hawthorn’s 2022 AFLW campaign after overcoming early-season injury and has since cemented her place in the team.

Richardson has been tasked with containing some of the league’s top players, including retired stars like Erin Phillips of Port Adelaide and Cora Staunton of GWS, showcasing her defensive prowess.

Off the field, Richardson recently earned Hawthorn’s Outstanding Excellence Award for her achievements balancing professional football with part-time work and completing a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours.

Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Keegan Brooksby expressed his satisfaction with Richardson’s long-term commitment to the club, praising her impressive start in the brown and gold and leadership qualities among her peers. Her re-signing, along with fellow defender Laura Elliott’s, until 2027, signals a promising future for Hawthorn’s backline.

Hawthorn’s 2024 AFLW season kicks off on September 1 with a highly anticipated match against Carlton at Kinetic Stadium in Frankston.
