After Missing Out on Garrett Crochet, Cubs Must Target Japanese Ace to Strengthen Pitching.

The Chicago Cubs had reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox before the left-handed pitcher was traded to the Boston Red Sox in a major deal.

Now, after missing out on Crochet, the Cubs need to focus on other strategies to contend for the National League Central title. FanSided’s Mark Powell suggested a new approach for the Cubs, with one key move being the signing of Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki.

The Baltimore Orioles' pitch to Roki Sasaki – The Baltimore Battery

Powell highlighted that Sasaki would be a great fit for the Cubs, noting their strong presence in Japan, similar to their recruitment of Shota Imanaga last year, which could help them land the 23-year-old. However, Powell warned that Sasaki’s affordability means his market will be competitive.

Sasaki is expected to be big-league ready, and if he performs well in spring training, he will likely secure a spot in any MLB rotation. While the Cubs are not alone in pursuing Sasaki, Powell emphasized that they should make him a priority and do whatever it takes to sign him.

The Cubs are among the top contenders in the race for Sasaki, and though they may not be able to outbid other teams, they can stand out in other ways. If the Cubs can acquire him at a reasonable price, it could make up for their failure to land Crochet. This would also allow the Cubs to save their prospects for a potential blockbuster trade for Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker.
