BREAKING NEWS: Indiana Pacers’ Top Prospect Opts Out, Eyes Potential Move to OKC Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder opted not to draft a center during the 2024 NBA Draft, keeping their options open as they head into free agency. One potential target emerging on their radar is Jalen Smith, who recently declined his player option with the Indiana Pacers, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Smith, a 24-year-old big man, completed his second season with the Pacers after being acquired midway through the 2021-22 campaign. During the past season, he featured in 61 games with 14 starts, averaging 9.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in 17.2 minutes of action.

The Thunder, who recently traded Josh Giddey to the Chicago Bulls, creating a gap in their frontcourt rotation, could benefit from Smith’s versatility. Despite primarily playing as a power forward, Smith’s ability to stretch the floor by shooting 42% from beyond the arc on 2.4 attempts per game stands out as a valuable asset.

With Oklahoma City continuing to rebuild and accumulate assets, Smith presents an intriguing option to bolster their frontcourt without breaking the bank. His decision to explore free agency opens the door for potential suitors, and the Thunder could capitalize on his skill set to complement rising star Chet Holmgren and enhance their rotation.

As the NBA free agency period approaches, teams like the Thunder will be looking to make strategic moves to strengthen their rosters. Should Oklahoma City opt to pursue Smith, he could provide immediate impact and contribute to their ongoing rebuilding efforts.
