Star Cowboys QB, 28, Parts Ways with Team After Contract Ends

On Sunday, reports surfaced that Russell Wilson, recently released by the Denver Broncos, is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency. This development directly impacts former Oklahoma State standout Mason Rudolph.

With Wilson’s arrival, the Steelers are poised for a quarterback battle between the seasoned veteran and former first-round pick Kenny Pickett. As it stands, this signals a likely departure for Rudolph from Pittsburgh.

Drafted by the Steelers in 2018 after a successful tenure with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Rudolph has primarily served as a backup quarterback throughout his career. Last season, he slid from second-string to third-string behind Mitch Trubisky, despite leading the team to victory in his three starts towards the end of the regular season, securing a playoff spot in the process. Even with Pickett’s return to full health, head coach Mike Tomlin opted to retain Rudolph as the starter.

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reported on the discussions between Rudolph’s representatives and the Steelers, indicating a parting of ways unless unforeseen circumstances arise.

Rudolph, 28, accumulated 3,085 passing yards and 19 touchdowns during his tenure with the Steelers, including a postseason start. His recent performances should bolster his confidence heading into free agency.

As Rudolph explores his options, it remains to be seen which opportunities he’ll pursue and what role he’ll assume come training camp later this year.
