Breaking News: St. Louis MLS Team Fires Coach Bradley Carnell Mid-Season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (AP) — St. Louis City has dismissed coach Bradley Carnell following a disappointing second season for the MLS team.

The decision was announced on Monday, just two days after a 4-3 loss to Vancouver in which the team squandered a two-goal lead. St. Louis City (3-7-10) is currently 12th in the 14-team Western Conference, a significant drop from last year when they became the first expansion team to win a conference regular-season title.

The team was eliminated by Kansas City in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

Technical Director John Hackworth will take over as interim manager.

“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” said St. Louis City Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel in a statement. “However, based on our results this year, we believe a coaching change is necessary as we work to improve our performance and results.”

Carnell, who was hired as the team’s first manager in January 2022, had received a contract extension before this season.

St. Louis City will play against San Jose on Wednesday night.
