Defenseman Erik Gustafsson’s time with the Rangers has come to an end as the 32-year-old Swede has signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news on July 1, 2024:

Gustafsson joins the Red Wings following consecutive 30-point seasons split between the Rangers, Maple Leafs, and Capitals. Standing at six feet and weighing 196 pounds, Gustafsson may not be the most imposing defenseman physically, but he has proven to be an offensive contributor. This move is likely in response to Shayne Gostisbehere testing free agency and Jake Walman’s trade to the San Jose Sharks.
Gustafsson has demonstrated his value on the power play, making him a suitable candidate to fill that role in Detroit. Known for his two-way, puck-moving abilities, Gustafsson has emerged as a solid third-pairing option over the past two seasons.
Hockey analyst JFresh also highlighted Gustafsson’s strengths on Twitter:
“Erik Gustafsson, signed 2x$2M by DET, is a two-way puck-moving defenceman who’s especially useful in the offensive zone. Has come into his own in the past two seasons as a very strong option to win minutes with a third pairing. #LGRW”

From a fan’s perspective, the term and value of Gustafsson’s deal are favorable. Two years at a total of $4 million is considered a savvy acquisition, especially in the context of today’s high-value contracts. Gustafsson’s addition to the Red Wings roster is anticipated to bolster their defensive depth and power play unit.
