Pittsburgh Penguins Split with Seasoned Forward.

This off-season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have executed a trade within the Metropolitan Division. Following their major acquisition of Erik Karlsson, aimed at a deep playoff run, the team also traded for Reilly Smith. However, at the start of free agency, they have now traded Smith to the New York Rangers. In return, the Penguins will receive a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. Additionally, Pittsburgh will retain 25 percent of Smith’s $5 million salary.

Penguins Trade Smith to the Rangers

Sidney Crosby’s stellar year is being overshadowed by the team’s struggles, as the Penguins found themselves outside the playoff race. In response, General Manager Kyle Dubas made significant moves this off-season. While the core group of Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, and Kris Letang remains intact, several players were put on the trading block.

Reilly Smith, fresh off a Stanley Cup victory with the Vegas Golden Knights, was expected to boost the Penguins’ chances. Despite a disappointing season with 13 goals and 40 points, Smith had been a key player alongside Malkin. Trading Smith, however, is a strategic decision for the Penguins’ future.

What This Means

For the Penguins:
Trading Smith is a sensible move for Pittsburgh, given their uncertain future. While the core players are still performing at a high level, the window for success is closing. Dubas’ decision to trade star winger Jake Guentzel at the deadline and now Smith indicates a strategy to maximize returns. More changes could be on the horizon for the Penguins.

For the Rangers:

Acquiring Reilly Smith is a smart move for the Rangers. Smith, capable of scoring 20 goals a season, brings playoff experience and versatility to the lineup. While he won’t be the leading star, he will serve as an excellent complementary piece. Though his time in Pittsburgh was short-lived, Smith is a valuable addition to the Rangers.
