A former executive recommends that the Atlanta Hawks focus on Jalen Johnson.

The Atlanta Hawks made significant changes to their roster this offseason. They drafted Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, traded Dejounte Murray, and allowed Saddiq Bey to enter unrestricted free agency by not extending a qualifying offer.

Speculation has been growing around Trae Young’s future, especially after his recent cryptic post. Amid this, a former NBA executive has suggested the Hawks should focus on Jalen Johnson. ESPN’s Bobby Marks highlighted the Hawks’ finances, noting that they have until October 21 to extend Johnson. Johnson has seen his scoring average rise from 5.6 to 16.1 points per game, the second-largest increase among players with at least 50 games in both seasons, behind only Cam Thomas.

Since General Manager Landry Fields joined in October 2020, the Hawks have extended a rookie contract each offseason. Johnson, whose three-point shooting improved from 28.8% to 35.5%, could command $25-$30 million per year. This potential contract surpasses De’Andre Hunter’s annual value, who is currently in a four-year, $90 million contract and has been involved in trade rumors.

Trading Hunter and Clint Capela could alleviate the financial burden of Johnson’s new deal. It’s anticipated that Johnson will receive an extension, as he and Risacher are considered the only safe players on the Hawks’ roster. Last season, the Hawks had a 27-29 record with Johnson and 9-17 without him.

The trade of Murray should benefit Johnson, who has proven effective with the ball. The Hawks had a better net efficiency rating with Johnson and Young on the floor compared to when Murray was paired with Young. This performance is likely one of the reasons behind trading Murray.

Johnson was in contention for Most Improved Player last season before injuries. With improved health and Murray’s departure, Johnson is poised for a breakout season in 2024-25, potentially fulfilling his early promise.
