Reports imply that the Marlins have listed their All-Star for trade.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Thursday that the Marlins are offering infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. for trade, with less than four weeks remaining before the July 30 MLB trade deadline.
Chisholm, 26, is a versatile player capable of handling both middle infield positions and center field. He was an All-Star in 2022 and has tallied 10 homers, 39 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 83 games for Miami this season. However, Chisholm’s frequent injuries and mixed reputation among peers are notable concerns.
The left-handed hitter has two more seasons of arbitration eligibility left, which, along with his age and skill set, could make him a worthwhile risk for a contending team.
The struggling 30-57 Marlins appear open for business, having recently traded another key player from their roster.
Troubling news for the Miami Marlins’ farm system
The Miami Marlins have three prospects on the MLB’s top 100 list, which provides some optimism for future improvements—a welcome prospect given the team’s current Major League stats. Curious about Fangraphs’ view on the farm system rankings, I found quite a bit to discuss.
Unfortunately, Fangraphs doesn’t have good news for the Miami Marlins. To understand their rating, let’s first look at how other teams are ranked. The Baltimore Orioles hold the top spot, followed by the Chicago Cubs in second place, thanks to their strengthened system despite their current struggles.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are third, maintaining their perennial high ranking. The AL East rivals Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are at #4 and #5, respectively. With three AL East teams in the top five, it’s a relief that the Marlins are in the other league.
In the NL East, the Washington Nationals have the highest-rated farm system at #6. The New York Mets are at a respectable #14, and the Philadelphia Phillies follow closely at #15. The Atlanta Braves are at #22, but their strong core is set for the decade.
Now, onto the Marlins. Sadly, they are ranked at a dismal #28, just two spots above the worst farm system. The Kansas City Royals are last at #30, with the Los Angeles Angels slightly better at #29. This low rating for the Marlins is disappointing. I hope Peter Bendix has a plan to improve the farm system.
