The Celtics continue to bring back players from their championship roster, extending even to their two-way players. The team has been very active in re-signing their own, and this trend continued on Monday. The Celtics announced they have signed guard JD Davison to a two-way contract.

Davison, 21, was drafted 53rd overall by the Celtics in 2022 out of Alabama. He has been on two-way deals for the past two seasons, developing his skills behind the scenes. The team is evidently pleased with his progress, as they have decided to bring back the third-year pro for another season with Boston.

“JD came out very young in the draft,” said C’s assistant general manager Austin Ainge. “Over the last two years in Maine, he’s made significant improvements. We’ve been very impressed with his development and believe he still has room to grow. He’s younger than the players we just drafted and many others who were drafted. We think he still has some growth potential. We’re very optimistic.”

Davison will join the Summer League Celtics for the third consecutive season, though he’s now more of a veteran. Last season, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 8.6 assists in 28 games with the Maine Celtics, helping them reach the G League Finals. He will continue to develop as a professional, given his young age.

As Ainge highlighted, Davison is still extremely young compared to some of his peers. In this year’s draft, the Celtics selected Baylor Scheierman at No. 30 and Anton Watson at No. 54, both of whom had five-year college careers and are roughly two years older than Davison. This youth gives Davison an advantage as he progresses in his pro career.

With Davison signed, the Celtics’ roster is nearly full. They currently have 14 of 15 standard roster spots filled. Additionally, they signed wing Drew Peterson to a two-way deal, leaving two of their three two-way slots occupied. Watson is expected to sign a two-way deal as well, bringing the roster close to capacity. This is a positive sign early in the summer following their 2024 title.
