The New York Knicks are still searching for a center to replace Isaiah Hartenstein, who recently signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After Hartenstein’s signing, many of the league’s centers were quickly snapped up in free agency. However, Daniel Theis, who just completed a season with the Los Angeles Clippers, remains unsigned.

Theis, 32, appeared in 59 games for the Clippers last season, averaging 6.3 points per game. Although he might have returned to the Clippers, their signings of Kai Jones and Mo Bamba have closed that door.

Could Theis make a move to New York?

Theis has reportedly attracted interest from both NBA teams and international clubs, but he hasn’t made a decision yet. While there haven’t been reports of the Knicks negotiating with Theis, it might be wise for them to consider reaching out to his agent.

Theis served as the starting center for the Boston Celtics during their 2019-20 Eastern Conference Finals run, demonstrating his ability to contribute to a top NBA team.

Although Theis wouldn’t need to start for the Knicks, it’s a role he could potentially fill. He last held a consistent starting role during the 2021-22 season with the Houston Rockets. More likely, if he joined the Knicks, he would serve as a backup to Mitchell Robinson, who is expected to resume his starting position.Apr 14, 2024; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Clippers center Daniel Theis (10) shoots against the Houston Rockets during the second half at Crypto.com Arena. Theis could provide valuable depth for the Knicks’ frontcourt, offering spacing as a potential 3-point shooter and providing rim protection on defense.

While it’s probable Theis will sign with a team other than the Knicks this season, considering that New York hasn’t yet pursued him, it’s an option they should explore given their current needs.
