The Guardians’ unexpected season has resulted in another surprising accomplishment: securing the most All-Star selections in the American League.
On Sunday, closer Emmanuel Clase, designated hitter David Fry, and first baseman Josh Naylor were named as reserves for the July 16 All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas. They will be joining third baseman José Ramírez and outfielder Steven Kwan, who were voted in by fans and lead MLB in hitting.
Even teams like the Yankees, known for their high-profile players and payroll, don’t boast five All-Stars. This includes the AL East-leading Orioles and the AL West-leading Mariners.
“It’s incredible,” said Naylor, who didn’t receive recognition last year. “We get to celebrate each other’s success and experience this together as a team. Having our families there too is wonderful, and it’s a great opportunity.”
This recognition is well-deserved for a team that has been one of baseball’s standout stories in the first half of the season.
Under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, the Guardians have played an aggressive brand of baseball and have led the AL Central since the opening week of April.
Despite concerns about their starting pitching, especially after ace Shane Bieber’s season-ending injury and Tommy John surgery, Cleveland has maintained a solid lead.
The team has seen contributions from all corners of its roster. The bullpen, led by Clase who secured his league-leading 27th save on Sunday, has been exceptionally strong. Furthermore, every young player called up has made significant impacts.
Vogt expressed his excitement about the team having the highest number of All-Stars since six were selected in 2018.
“It’s incredibly thrilling for our group to have five representatives, and all five are very, very deserving,” Vogt said after Sunday’s 5-4 win against San Francisco. “I’m especially happy for Kwan, Josh, and David — first-time All-Stars who have truly earned this recognition.”
