Three Standout Players Named Reserves as Guardians Dominate AL All-Star Selections

The Cleveland Guardians‘ remarkable season has led to another unexpected milestone: securing the most All-Star selections in the American League.

On Sunday, closer Emmanuel Clase, designated hitter David Fry, and first baseman Josh Naylor were named as reserves for the July 16 All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas. They will join third baseman José Ramírez and outfielder Steven Kwan, who were voted in by fans and are leading MLB in hitting.

Even high-profile teams like the Yankees, with their star-studded rosters and hefty salaries, don’t have five All-Stars. Neither do the AL East-leading Orioles or the AL West-leading Mariners.

“It’s fantastic,” said Naylor, who was overlooked last year. “We have a chance to celebrate each other’s success and be together there, enjoying all the opportunities and moments as a team. Our families will be there too, which is great, and it’s a wonderful opportunity.”

This recognition is well-deserved for a team that has been one of baseball’s standout stories in the first half of the season.

Under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, the Guardians have played an aggressive style of baseball and have led the AL Central since April’s opening week. Despite concerns about their starting pitching, especially after ace Shane Bieber’s season-ending injury and Tommy John surgery, Cleveland has maintained a solid lead.

The team has seen contributions from all parts of its roster. The bullpen, anchored by Clase who secured his league-leading 27th save on Sunday, has been particularly strong. Additionally, every young player called up has made significant contributions.

Vogt expressed his delight at the team receiving Cleveland’s highest number of All-Stars since six were selected in 2018.

“It’s incredibly exciting for our group to have five representatives, and all five are very, very deserving,” Vogt said after Sunday’s 5-4 win against San Francisco. “I’m especially thrilled for Kwannie, Josh, and David — first-time All-Stars who have truly earned this honor.”

As the Guardians continue their impressive season, their five All-Star selections are a testament to the team’s collective effort and success. The All-Star Game will not only be a celebration of individual talent but also a reflection of the Guardians’ remarkable journey so far this year.
