Edmonton Oilers Finalize Major Trade Deal with Rival Team

Matt Savoie #93 of the Buffalo Sabres

In a significant trade that promises to shake up their roster, the Edmonton Oilers have acquired promising forward Matt Savoie from the Buffalo Sabres. In exchange, the Oilers are sending forwards Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to Buffalo.

Savoie, a 20-year-old right-shot forward, was a highly-touted prospect selected ninth overall by the Sabres in the 2022 NHL Draft. Hailing from St. Albert, Savoie made his NHL debut for Buffalo in November. He also spent time with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, where he appeared in six games, notching two goals and three assists.

The Oilers are getting a player with a standout junior career. Savoie excelled in the WHL, playing 283 games for the Winnipeg Ice, Wenatchee Wild, and Moose Jaw Warriors. Over his WHL career, he amassed 103 goals and 160 assists, totaling 263 points with an impressive plus/minus rating of +129.

Edmonton’s General Manager Ken Holland expressed optimism about the acquisition. “Matt brings a dynamic skill set and a proven track record of offensive production. We believe he will be a valuable addition to our lineup as we continue to build a team capable of competing at the highest level.”

For the Sabres, acquiring Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio offers a chance to add depth and versatility to their forward group. McLeod, known for his speed and two-way play, has been a reliable presence for the Oilers. Tullio, a gritty forward with offensive upside, adds further potential to Buffalo’s developing roster.

This trade signifies Edmonton’s commitment to bolstering their roster with young talent as they seek to capitalize on their competitive window. For Buffalo, the addition of McLeod and Tullio represents a strategic move to strengthen their core and add to their rebuilding efforts.

As both teams look to the future, this trade could become a defining moment in their respective trajectories. Edmonton fans will eagerly anticipate Savoie’s impact, while Buffalo supporters will watch closely as McLeod and Tullio integrate into the Sabres’ system.
