The Cincinnati Reds have traded left-handed reliever Alex Young to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Austin Slater and cash considerations. Following the completion of the trade late on Sunday night, the Giants confirmed that Young would be assigned to Triple-A Sacramento.
Slater, 31 years old, departs San Francisco for the first time in his eight-year MLB career. He holds a .200 batting average with one home run and nine RBIs across 43 games played this season.
Despite recent injuries, including elbow surgery last October and hamstring strains, Slater has been a reliable pinch-hitter.
According to Reds general manager Brad Meador, the trade was deemed advantageous for both organizations. Young, aged 30, had pitched just two innings in three appearances for the Reds this season.
He had previously played for the Giants in 2022 after being acquired from the Guardians, and also had stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2019 to 2021, accumulating experience over parts of six seasons in the majors.
