Nationals Let Go of Former Top Pick Due to Batting Issues, Focus on Young Talent Ahead
In a move signaling the end of an experimental chapter, the Washington Nationals have placed infielder Nick Senzel on unconditional release waivers this morning. This decision comes after the Nationals failed to find a trade partner for Senzel, who had been designated for assignment last Saturday.
Senzel, originally the #2 overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds, joined the Nationals last offseason with hopes of revitalizing his career. However, plagued by injuries and struggling to find consistent offensive production, Senzel never quite lived up to the expectations set by his early promise. In nearly 1400 plate appearances split between the Reds and the Nationals, he managed a modest .239/.302/.368 batting line.
The Nationals, in their rebuilding phase, took a chance on Senzel’s potential, committing $2 million for the season in the hopes of unlocking his latent talent. Transitioning him back to his natural position at third base, the Nationals sought to provide Senzel with a fresh start. Yet, despite a promising start with five early home runs upon his return from injury in mid-April, Senzel’s offensive output waned significantly, batting just .207/.309/.299 since May.
With rookie Trey Lipscomb now getting a chance at third base and the Nationals focusing on evaluating younger talents amidst a challenging season, Senzel’s release underscores the team’s shifting priorities. As Senzel hits release waivers, any team claiming him would assume the remainder of his $2 million salary for this year. However, given his recent struggles and injury history, it’s anticipated that Senzel will clear waivers and become a free agent, free to explore opportunities with another organization, possibly on a minor league contract.
The Nationals, now facing a significant roster transition and focusing on developing their young talent, continue to adjust their lineup in the hopes of rebuilding a competitive team for future seasons.
