Breaking News: Texas Longhorns Fortify 2025 Class with Key Linebacker Addition

The Texas Longhorns have faced setbacks recently, missing out on several top recruits. However, they made a significant gain on Friday by securing a commitment from four-star linebacker Jonathan Cunningham of North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, TX.

Cunningham chose Texas over other contenders like Utah and TCU. His decision followed a series of official visits, including one to Austin on June 14. He also visited Kansas on June 21, Utah on June 7, and TCU on May 3.

Texas linebackers coach Johnny Nansen, who was hired this offseason to replace Jeff Choate, played a key role in Cunningham’s recruitment.

Rated as a four-star prospect, Cunningham is ranked No. 56 in Texas and No. 24 among linebackers in the 2025 class by Rivals.com. According to On3 Industry Rankings, he is a three-star recruit, ranked No. 422 overall, No. 44 among linebackers, and No. 63 in Texas.

During the previous season with North Crowley, Cunningham recorded 38 tackles, nine tackles for loss, one sack, and six quarterback hurries. His performance helped his team achieve a 14-1 record and advance to the 6A State semifinals.

Cunningham’s commitment brings the Longhorns’ 2025 recruiting class to 14 members, including the second linebacker, alongside four-star Elijah Barnes. He is also the third commitment for Texas this month, following four-star edge rusher Smith Orogbo on July 1 and four-star cornerback Kade Phillips on July 6.
