Red Sox Prospect Wins First-Ever Futures Skills Showcase

On Saturday at the MLB All-Star Futures Game, top Boston Red Sox prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel showcased their abilities. Roman Anthony, the final member of the Red Sox’s “Big Three” prospect trio, also made a notable impact.

Although Anthony, a highly regarded 20-year-old outfielder, did not compete in the main exhibition game with Mayer and Teel, he participated in the inaugural Futures Skills Showcase at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Competing against seven other top prospects from MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, Anthony claimed the trophy. The event featured three challenges: Hit it Here, Call Your Shot, and Swing For the Fences.

Anthony initially struggled, failing to score in the first round and placing sixth before the Home Run Derby segment. However, he displayed impressive power by hitting six home runs, the highest number of any participant, to secure the win.

“Going into the last round, I had nothing to lose,” Anthony said, according to MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. “I just went up there, took some swings, and it went pretty well.”

Anthony, selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2022 draft, is ranked as Boston’s second-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, trailing only Mayer and positioned just ahead of Teel.

Like his Double-A Portland teammates Mayer and Teel, Anthony might be on track for a promotion to Triple-A Worcester later in the season. This year with Portland, he has hit .241 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs, and a .349 on-base percentage over 66 games.
