Report: Dodgers’ Pitcher to Miss Rest of 2024 Season Due to Torn Esophagus

The Los Angeles Dodgers were hopeful for Dustin May’s imminent return, but his comeback will be significantly delayed. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, May will miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season after undergoing a procedure to repair a torn esophagus. Last season, May had surgery to fix a torn flexor tendon in his right arm and hasn’t made an appearance in 2024.

The esophagus injury, sustained in a “non-baseball setting,” will keep him out for the rest of the campaign. The 26-year-old sought medical help after experiencing stomach and throat pain, leading to the procedure.

May made nine appearances in 2023 and has only pitched in 46 games over the past five seasons, with injuries disrupting his once-promising career. He was limited to five starts in 2021 and six in 2022, never surpassing 56 1/3 innings in a single season.

The right-hander aims to regain his prior form when he returns to the mound in 2025. However, this significant setback is a major blow to the Dodgers’ injury-plagued starting rotation, which was counting on May’s addition in the near future.
