The Houston Texans have bolstered their receiving corps by signing free agent wide receiver Quintez Cephus, according to an announcement by his agents, SportsTrust Advisors, on Tuesday. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Cephus, 26, returns to the NFL after missing the entire 2023 season due to a suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy. Reinstated by the NFL in April, Cephus initially signed with the Buffalo Bills, but his tenure was short-lived as the team released him on May 16.
A fifth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2020 NFL Draft, Cephus showcased his potential during his time in Detroit. Over three seasons from 2020 to 2022, he recorded 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns across 22 games, including six starts. Despite his promising performance, the Lions released him following his suspension.
Cephus’s addition to the Texans roster marks a fresh start for the wide receiver, who will look to make an impact in Houston’s offense. The Texans, who have been seeking to add depth and talent to their receiving unit, see Cephus as a player with the potential to contribute significantly.
As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Cephus to see how he integrates into the Texans’ system and whether he can capitalize on this opportunity to revive his NFL career.
