Yankees Rumored to Eye Red Sox’s Baseball Manager, as Potential Offseason Acquisition.
Excitement is high around the Boston Red Sox, but tough decisions loom.
The 2024 season is progressing rapidly, with the second half about to begin. As the trade deadline approaches, the race to the playoffs intensifies.
Boston has a strong chance of making the playoffs, thanks largely to manager Alex Cora. Despite being underestimated, Cora has consistently positioned the Red Sox for success.
Cora’s leadership is a significant asset, recognized by other teams. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, he’s expected to secure a major new deal. If he doesn’t return to the Red Sox, the New York Yankees have been mentioned as a potential fit by MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith.
“How could the Red Sox explain not re-signing Cora if he leads this young roster to the playoffs when expectations were so low? But the decision is also up to Cora,” Smith said. “He will be a free agent and there presumably will be at least a few teams lined up to pay him top dollar like Craig Counsell’s deal (five years, $40 million) with the Cubs. Will Boston be willing to pay that much for its manager?”
“The Yankees are another fit if Aaron Boone can’t get them to the World Series. New York likely will buy big at the trade deadline and bring in elite talent to supplement their already strong roster. Another failed postseason run could mean the end for Boone in New York.”
If Cora were to leave Boston for New York, it would be a significant blow. The hope is that the Boston front office will recognize his contributions and retain him.
