Report: Bulls Officially Sign Former Celtics Guard On Two-Way Deal

DJ Steward #9 of the Maine Celtics

The Chicago Bulls have officially signed guard DJ Steward to a two-way contract, the team announced in a press release. Steward, 22, is a 6-foot-2 guard who went undrafted out of Duke in 2021. He has predominantly played for the Stockton Kings in the G League and had a stint with the Vancouver Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

This summer, Steward has been impressing with the Bulls in the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 19.3 points per game. His performance included a standout 37-point game on Friday, showcasing his scoring prowess and earning him a spot on the Bulls’ roster.

With the addition of Steward, the Bulls have now filled all three of their two-way contract slots. The other two players are shooting guard Andrew Funk and power forward Adama Sanogo. This move comes as part of a series of changes for the Bulls during a dynamic offseason.

Steward’s journey to the Bulls has been a winding one. He signed with the Boston Celtics last October but was waived before the season started. Shortly after, he joined the Maine Celtics in the G League, continuing to develop his game.

The Bulls’ offseason has been marked by significant roster changes, with more potentially on the horizon. They began by trading guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Josh Giddey. Following that, standout wing DeMar DeRozan was sent to the Sacramento Kings in a three-way deal involving the San Antonio Spurs.

Reports indicate that the Bulls are also exploring trades involving guard Zach LaVine, though his substantial contract is seen as a significant obstacle. Additionally, center Nikola Vucevic might be on the trading block as the Bulls navigate this period of transformation.

With the signing of DJ Steward and the potential for further roster moves, the Chicago Bulls are clearly in a phase of rebuilding and retooling, aiming to create a more competitive and cohesive unit for the upcoming season.
