The Phoenix Suns are reportedly set to welcome another assistant coach to Mike Budenholzer’s staff. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, James Posey will be joining the Suns as an assistant coach.
“ESPN Sources: James Posey is joining the Phoenix Suns as an assistant coach. Posey — who had a 12-year NBA playing career — has had coaching stops with the Wizards and Cavaliers,” Wojnarowski tweeted.

Posey enjoyed a successful playing career spanning from 1999 to 2011, winning two NBA championships with the Miami Heat in 2006 and the Boston Celtics in 2008. Over his 12-year career, he played for seven different teams and amassed over 4,000 points and rebounds.
Transitioning to coaching, Posey began his coaching career in 2013 with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ G League affiliate, the Canton Charge, before moving up to the Cavaliers’ full-time assistant coaching staff from 2014 to 2019. In 2022, he joined the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach and now brings his expertise to the Suns.
Posey joins a notable list of coaching hires under Budenholzer, including Brent Barry, David Fizdale, Vince Legarza, Mike Hopkins, Chad Forcier, and Chaisson Allen. With these additions, it appears Budenholzer’s staff is nearing completion, if not already full.
Phoenix just concluded their Summer League run, and the team will next take action when training camp begins in a couple of months. The addition of Posey and the experienced staff Budenholzer is assembling signals the Suns’ commitment to building a strong foundation as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season.
