Hornets Community Mourns Loss of Beloved PA Announcer
The Charlotte Hornets organization and its fans are mourning the loss of Patrick “Big Pat” Doughty, the team’s public address announcer for nearly two decades. Known for his powerful voice and lively presence, Doughty passed away at the age of 55. The team expressed deep sorrow over his passing.
Doughty’s journey with the Hornets began during the Bobcats era when he joined in 2004 to enhance the game-day experience at what was then the Time Warner Cable Arena. His unique voice and dedication became a key part of the Spectrum Center’s atmosphere, energizing fans and becoming a familiar figure in the Charlotte basketball scene, which has featured players like former point guard Kemba Walker and current star LaMelo Ball.
Despite facing health challenges in recent years, including neuropathy that affected his motor skills and nerves, Doughty remained committed to his announcing duties. He continued his work from a wheelchair, often traveling between Charlotte and his hometown of Pocomoke City, Maryland.
In a show of solidarity, the entire Hornets organization mourned Doughty’s passing. The team shared an official statement expressing their grief on their official X account, celebrating his role as an integral part of “Buzz City.”
Doughty’s impact on the Hornets and their fans was profound. He was more than just an announcer; he was an adopted Charlottean and a “rock star” at games, known for his infectious energy and friendly demeanor. His contributions to the game-day experience were invaluable, and his passing leaves a void that will be felt by the Hornets community. The team and its fans will always remember the joy he brought to the sport and the franchise.
