Suns’ $230 Million Signing: Will It Deliver on Expectations?

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns secured a late addition from the free agency market by signing point guard Tyus Jones, filling the void left after Chris Paul’s departure last summer and giving the team the floor general they’ve been seeking.

Jones, who started nearly 70 games at point guard last season, agreed to a one-year deal worth $3 million.

“I’m excited and ready for the opportunity. I feel like the fit is perfect,” said Jones (h/t The Arizona Republic’s Duane Rankin). “I’m eager for the season to start. Although there’s still some time, I’m just itching to play. I want to get on the court with the team, build camaraderie and chemistry, and ultimately compete for a championship. That’s our main goal.”

Earlier in the offseason, the Suns also signed guard Monte Morris. Both Morris and Jones are known for having some of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the NBA.

“They did an excellent job recruiting me, but in the end, I felt the role and fit were perfect for me,” said Jones. “Looking at the roster, it’s clear there’s a lot of talent, and I believe I can contribute to a championship-contending team. I’m very excited about it.”

Jones also mentioned to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Mike Budenholzer outlined a plan for him to start in Phoenix, where he will be tasked with organizing an offense that includes stars like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant.

The Suns’ front office is equally excited about the upcoming season:

“We have Devin Booker and Bradley Beal,” said Suns front office leader Josh Bartelstein. “We feel confident about those guys. The coach has various lineups to experiment with, but we’re optimistic about those three forming a formidable trio alongside Kevin Durant and Jusuf Nurkic.”
