Nic Newman emphasized the importance of maintaining CONSISTENCY in his message before the Blues’ open training session at IKON Park.
With the Opening Round nearing and Carlton heading to the Gabba where their 2023 season concluded, Newman expressed the team’s eagerness to commence the new season.
“I believe the team is eager to head up there, get a change of scenery, and give it their all,” Newman remarked.
“We demonstrated our capabilities in that [preliminary final], but it’s about sustaining that performance over the long haul. Starting strong is just part of the equation; we aim to consistently perform at that level.”
Regarding consistency, Newman stressed its significance for the entire squad in 2024, referring to the ups and downs experienced throughout the 2023 season. He stated the club’s aspiration to establish themselves as a consistently competitive force.
“The truth is, we faced inconsistency during the home-and-away season last year. We had our rough patches but also found moments of brilliance. Our focus now is on maintaining consistency week in and week out,” he explained.
While Newman acknowledged the challenging task of facing Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron, he expressed confidence in the backline’s ability, especially following their strong performance in the second half of the Community Series match against Melbourne.
“We’re uncertain about the match-up assignments, but we understand the importance of containing [Cameron] given his past impact. Our second-half defensive display against Melbourne showcased our capabilities, particularly ‘Kempy’ and Lewis Young,” he noted.
Newman displayed no concerns about Harry McKay’s form, commending the forward’s dedication and hard work, which translated into impressive performances during the pre-season games.
“Harry has delivered outstanding performances in the pre-season, showcasing his commitment and skills on the field. He focuses on his strengths, and we have complete faith in him. His efforts on and off the field speak volumes,” Newman remarked.
