As the NHL offseason marches on, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a precarious position with their forward group. With Tyler Bertuzzi departing for the Chicago Blackhawks, the Leafs have yet to make a move to bolster their offensive depth. NHL analyst Michael Mazzei of TheLeafsNation suggests that the Maple Leafs would be wise to consider signing free agent forward Dominik Kubalik.

The Case for Kubalik

The Leafs are in need of additional depth on the left wing, and Kubalik, a versatile forward, could be a perfect fit. Mazzei points out that Kubalik’s potential to step into a top-six role and secure minutes on the second power-play unit could be invaluable. The 28-year-old has had an inconsistent NHL career but possesses the tools to help fill the void left by Bertuzzi’s departure. Kubalik’s presence could offer a similar net-front presence and offensive spark, all while coming at a significantly reduced cost compared to Bertuzzi’s contract.

Kubalik’s NHL journey has been a rollercoaster. After a standout rookie season with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he tallied 30 goals and 16 assists for 46 points in 68 games, his performance has fluctuated. Last season with the Ottawa Senators, Kubalik managed only 11 goals and 4 assists in 74 games. Despite the ups and downs, his potential to revitalize his career on a competitive team like the Leafs is enticing.

Potential Replacement for Robertson

Another factor in the Kubalik equation is the status of Nick Robertson. Robertson, a restricted free agent, has expressed his desire for a trade, which could open up a spot on the left wing. If the Leafs cannot reach an agreement with Robertson and he is dealt, Kubalik could be a cost-effective replacement. However, general manager Brad Treliving remains optimistic about Robertson’s future with the team. “Obviously, I have known that there was some frustration with Nick, but we look at Nick as an excellent player,” Treliving stated on July 1. “There’s a great opportunity for Nick here. We need him to be a good player for us.”

Robertson has shown potential in his 87 NHL games, with 17 goals and 17 assists. If he does depart, Kubalik’s experience and skill could help fill the gap left by his absence.

Other Potential Targets

Mazzei also mentions two other players who could be on the Maple Leafs’ radar: Gustav Lindstrom and Chris Tierney. Lindstrom, a defenseman, could serve as a potential replacement for Jani Hakanpaa if his contract falls through. Lindstrom’s performance last season with the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings saw him record 3 goals and 7 assists in 46 games.

Tierney, a centerman, could provide depth similar to Noah Gregor’s role last season. Despite not being a high-profile acquisition, Tierney’s playstyle could align well with Treliving’s vision for the team. Over his career, Tierney has played 649 NHL games, amassing 80 goals and 168 assists for 248 points. He could offer valuable experience and depth to the Leafs’ lineup.

Conclusion

The Maple Leafs have a crucial decision to make as they navigate their roster adjustments. Signing Dominik Kubalik could be a savvy move to address their forward depth, particularly if they need to replace Nick Robertson. Coupled with potential additions like Lindstrom and Tierney, the Leafs have the opportunity to strengthen their lineup and position themselves as contenders for the upcoming season.
