The Philadelphia Phillies have bolstered their pitching depth by claiming right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler off waivers from their National League East rivals, the Miami Marlins, on Sunday. To accommodate Tyler on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-hander Nick Nelson for assignment.

Tyler, 27, is joining the Phillies after a stint with the Marlins, where he made a modest impact as a starter. In his first season with Miami, Tyler went 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA across eight games, including seven starts. Over 31 innings, he struck out 25 batters while issuing 18 walks. His performance, while showing potential, also highlighted areas for improvement.

In his career, Tyler has made appearances for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021, the San Diego Padres in 2022, and the Marlins. Across 15 career games, including seven starts, he holds a 1-2 record with a 4.31 ERA. His addition to the Phillies’ Triple-A Lehigh Valley squad provides the team with another arm to evaluate and develop.

Nick Nelson, 28, was designated for assignment to clear space for Tyler. Nelson appeared in three games for the Phillies this season, pitching to a 5.40 ERA but failing to secure a decision. Over his career, he has a 5-4 record with a 5.21 ERA in 73 games, including stints with the New York Yankees (2020-21) and the Phillies (2022-24). Nelson’s departure opens up a spot on the Phillies’ roster as the team continues to refine its pitching staff.

The move reflects the Phillies’ ongoing efforts to optimize their roster and seek improvements. As Tyler joins the organization, he will look to make an impact and secure a permanent role with the team.
