The Detroit Tigers are making significant roster changes as they continue to build for the future, promoting infield prospects Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo. The moves come as part of a broader strategy to inject fresh talent into the lineup, with the changes set to take effect before Friday’s game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

In a corresponding move, the Tigers have designated veteran third baseman Gio Urshela for assignment. Urshela, a seasoned player with nine years of MLB experience, was informed of the decision following Thursday’s win over the Seattle Mariners. The Tigers also announced that outfielder Akil Baddoo has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo, and pitcher Easton Lucas has been designated for assignment.

Urshela, who joined the Tigers for the 2024 season, has had a steady career since making his MLB debut in 2015. He is best known for his time with the New York Yankees from 2019 to 2021, where he became a fan favorite, amassing 296 hits, 41 home runs, and 153 RBIs. Throughout his career, Urshela has compiled 681 hits, 69 home runs, and 317 RBIs. In 2024, he contributed 73 hits, 5 home runs, and 37 RBIs for the Tigers. With about $353,000 remaining on his $1.5 million salary, Urshela has been placed on waivers, and the Tigers will know by Sunday if another team claims him.

The decision to promote Jung and Sweeney signifies the Tigers’ commitment to their young talent. Both prospects have shown promise in Triple-A, and their arrival on the major league roster is eagerly anticipated. The upcoming series against the Yankees will serve as a critical test for these prospects as they make their MLB debut.

For the Tigers, these moves underscore a new direction, balancing the integration of emerging talent with difficult decisions on veteran players. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these roster changes impact the team as they look to the future.
