Breaking News: Phillies Update: Suárez Nears Return, Braves Face NL East Series Without Riley

The Phillies had a break on Monday after securing four wins in six games against the Marlins and Nationals during a homestand. They now head to Atlanta for a pivotal NL East series against the Braves.

Despite a challenging few weeks post-All-Star break, the Phillies have managed to stay atop the NL East thanks to favorable outcomes elsewhere. Their recent success, albeit against less formidable opponents, suggests they may be regaining their momentum.

As of Monday afternoon, their 73-51 record places them as the top team in the majors, and with the postseason race heating up, they may soon see additional reinforcements.

Ranger Suárez, who has been out since late July with lower-back tightness, is nearing his return. He pitched a simulated game on Saturday, throwing 57 pitches and 20 more in the bullpen. Manager Rob Thomson hopes Suárez will be back for the Royals series starting Friday in Kansas City.

Outfielder Austin Hays, who has been sidelined with a hamstring strain, might also return for the Royals series. Hays participated in Suárez’s simulated game and could embark on a quick rehab stint before rejoining the team.

The Phillies are taking the Atlanta series seriously, with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and likely Cristopher Sánchez, fresh off a stellar complete game against the Nationals, lined up to pitch.

In a significant development, the Braves announced that third baseman Austin Riley will miss the rest of the season due to a broken right hand. This injury comes after a series of setbacks for Atlanta, including the loss of ace Spencer Strider to Tommy John surgery and Ronald Acuña Jr. to an ACL tear. Riley’s injury, sustained from a high pitch, further complicates the Braves’ efforts as they struggle to close the gap in the division while the Phillies gain ground.
