The Los Angeles Dodgers have reignited their championship chase with a strong performance in 2024, winning 11 of their last 15 games as they gear up for the postseason. Despite the optimism surrounding this team, the past few seasons have taught Dodgers fans to tread carefully. Yet, with a roster primed for success and a window that appears to remain open for the foreseeable future, the focus is inevitably shifting towards bolstering their pitching staff for the coming years.

As the Dodgers contemplate their roster for 2025, one name that has emerged in speculative discussions is New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. Known for his dominant presence on the mound, Cole is slated to become one of the most sought-after free agents if he opts out of his current contract—a scenario Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller explored in a recent article titled, “Landing Spots for Gerrit Cole amid Opt-Out Rumors of Yankees Contract.”

Dodgers Positioned for Potential Cole Pursuit

The Dodgers’ pitching situation for 2025 is notably fluid, with only a few firm commitments. Tyler Glasnow and rookie Yoshinobu Yamamoto are set to be in the rotation, and the team will likely retain Gavin Stone. Speculation also surrounds the potential return of Shohei Ohtani to the mound. This leaves room for the Dodgers to consider a high-profile addition like Cole, despite the current focus on playoff success.

Cole, who boasts a career 2.93 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 17 postseason starts, would be a valuable asset for a team looking to strengthen its pitching depth. His ability to perform in October could be exactly what the Dodgers need to avoid the pitching pitfalls that have plagued them in previous postseason runs.

As Miller points out, the Dodgers may be tempted to pursue Cole if their pitching falters again this fall. While adding Cole to their roster would come with financial implications—projected to reach a significant pinch point in 2027 due to existing commitments—the potential for a proven postseason performer could outweigh these concerns.

Contract Quirks and Cole’s Future

Cole’s contract with the Yankees includes an opt-out clause that allows him to leave after this season. The Yankees, however, can retain him by extending the deal with an additional year and $36 million, pushing the total value to $360 million over 10 years. The consensus is that the Yankees will exercise this option, given Cole’s track record of excellence.

Despite concerns about Cole’s recent elbow injury and his age—turning 34 this week—he remains a reliable ace with a 3.58 ERA this season and a career strikeout leader. However, the Yankees’ potential pursuit of outfielder Juan Soto, who is also expected to be a major free-agent target, could impact their decision on Cole.

If the Yankees face financial constraints due to a bidding war for Soto, they might allow Cole to explore free agency. This possibility, though considered a longshot, is something the Dodgers will be closely monitoring as they plan their pitching strategy for 2025.

Conclusion

As the Dodgers continue their 2024 campaign, their sights are already set on fortifying their roster for the future. Gerrit Cole represents a high-profile target who could address their pitching needs and solidify their status as perennial contenders. While his future remains uncertain, the Dodgers’ potential pursuit of Cole underscores their commitment to maintaining a championship-caliber roster well into the next season.
