As the Detroit Red Wings gear up for a promising 2024-25 NHL season, a bold trade proposal has surfaced that could significantly bolster their blue line. According to PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a user has proposed a deal that would see the Red Wings acquiring veteran defenseman Adam Larsson from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for Justin Holl, Marco Kasper, and a 2025 third-round pick.

Trade Breakdown

Red Wings Receive:
– Adam Larsson

Kraken Receive:
– Justin Holl
– Marco Kasper
– 2025 Third-Round Pick

Why It Makes Sense

The proposed trade presents a compelling case for both teams involved. For Detroit, Larsson would provide a seasoned presence on their blue line. Selected fourth overall in the 2011 NHL Draft, Larsson is entering the final year of his four-year, $16 million deal with the Kraken. His experience and defensive acumen could slot him seamlessly into the Red Wings’ second pairing alongside Moritz Seider—if Seider, currently an RFA, signs before the season commences.

Last season, Larsson logged 81 games with Seattle, recording 4 goals and 14 assists. Over his career, he has accumulated 213 points in 848 games. His addition would bolster Detroit’s defensive depth and offer insurance in case Seider’s contract remains unresolved.

Kraken’s Perspective

On the flip side, the Kraken would receive Holl, who could fill a role on Seattle’s third pairing. Holl, who has two years remaining on his three-year, $10.2 million contract, struggled in his first season with Detroit, appearing in only 38 games with no goals and just 5 assists. The move could provide the Kraken with a more affordable option to offset Larsson’s departure.

The centerpiece of this trade for Seattle is Marco Kasper. At 20 years old, Kasper, selected eighth overall in 2022, had an impressive season in the AHL with 35 points. His potential for NHL minutes next season makes him a valuable asset for the Kraken as they look to build for the future.

The Future for Holl and Kasper

Holl’s future with Detroit has been under scrutiny. Despite signing a three-year deal in July 2023, Holl’s performance has led some analysts to suggest a potential buyout if his situation does not improve. NHL analyst Max Bultman of The Athletic noted that if Holl continues to be a healthy scratch, the Red Wings might explore a buyout option in the summer of 2025.

Kasper’s inclusion in the trade would signal Seattle’s commitment to enhancing their roster with young, promising talent.

Kraken’s Offseason Moves

Seattle has been active this offseason, looking to rebound from a disappointing 2023-24 season. The Kraken secured notable signings, including defenseman Brandon Montour on a seven-year, $50 million deal and forward Chandler Stephenson with a $43.75 million contract. Both players bring valuable experience and leadership, having won Stanley Cups in their careers.

Kraken General Manager Ron Francis expressed enthusiasm about these additions, highlighting their impact on the team’s dynamics.

Looking Ahead

As both teams prepare for the new season, the proposed trade reflects Detroit’s ambition to strengthen their defense while giving Seattle a chance to rebuild and integrate promising young talent. With the Red Wings set to make a push for a playoff spot, and the Kraken aiming to bounce back, this trade could play a pivotal role in shaping their respective seasons.

The Red Wings and Kraken open their 2024-25 NHL campaigns with high expectations and key roster decisions that will influence their paths forward.
