In a surprising move, the Cincinnati Reds announced the hiring of two-time World Series champion Terry Francona as their new manager on Friday. This news comes after Francona, 65, stepped away from baseball following the 2023 season as the manager of the Cleveland Guardians due to health concerns. Now, a year later, the Reds have secured him with a three-year contract and a club option for the 2028 season.

At his introductory press conference on Monday, Francona shared his thoughts on returning to management. “I honestly didn’t see myself managing again,” he said, according to ESPN. “I had a really good year away from the game. The Reds came out to visit, and it just felt right.”

Francona emphasized his focus on accountability, as reported by MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon. “I firmly believe that players enjoy being coached, as long as there is a solid reason and you’re ultra organized. And that we will be,” he promised. “I will dedicate all my energy to ensuring the players are fully committed to playing the game correctly and with respect.”

This announcement follows the Reds’ decision to part ways with David Bell on September 22, just a week before the regular season ended. Bell had a 409-456 (.473) record during his six years with the team.

Francona’s past as a player for the Reds in 1987 may have influenced his decision. He noted that the talent and athleticism of that team “reminds me a lot of the group we have here now.” Despite a disappointing 77-85 record in the 2024 season, the Reds boast impressive talent, including shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who led the team in home runs (25), hits (160), and stolen bases (67), along with RBI leader Spencer Steer and second baseman Jonathan India. The Reds also have a promising young pitching staff, highlighted by strikeout leader Hunter Greene.

With a managerial record of 1,950-1,672 (.538) and two World Series titles with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007, Francona appears eager to take on this new challenge, drawing parallels between the current roster and the 1987 team he played for.
